The course study

Overview

Sunningdale's Old Course is widely regarded as the most beautiful inland course in England. Set within the Surrey heathland, the course weaves through pine, birch, and heather on sandy soil that drains superbly and provides year-round playability. Willie Park Jr.'s original 1901 design has been refined over the decades, but the essential character remains — a course of elegance, variety, and subtle challenge. Bobby Jones once described his round here as the finest he had ever played.

The experience

Playing the Old Course at Sunningdale is pure pleasure. The turf is immaculate, the routing flows naturally through the heathland landscape, and every hole offers a distinct challenge. The course is not brutally long by modern standards, but position is everything — finding the correct angle for your approach is the key to scoring. The par-3s are outstanding, and the closing stretch from 15 to 18 provides a memorable finish.

Signature holes

The par-4 5th is a classic — a sweeping dogleg through the pines to a well-protected green. The 10th, a short par-4, tempts you to drive the green but punishes any shot that misses. The 18th provides a fitting finale, a long par-4 that demands a precise approach to an elevated green.

Practical information

Sunningdale is a private members' club. Visitor access is available on weekdays, typically Tuesdays and Thursdays, and must be arranged in advance. A letter of introduction from your home club may be required. Handicap certificate required (maximum 18 for men, 24 for women). Jacket and tie required in the dining room.

Where to stay

Coworth Park, a Dorchester Collection hotel, is a short drive away and offers five-star luxury in a stunning countryside setting. The Berystede Hotel in Ascot provides comfortable accommodation within easy reach of the course.

Where to eat

Restaurant Coworth Park holds a Michelin star and is the finest dining option in the area. The Sunningdale clubhouse itself serves excellent lunches in a traditional English setting that is part of the experience.
